Convergent Design ships nanoFlash
July 15, 2009, Colorado Springs, CO
Convergent Design announced today volume shipments of the highly anticipated nanoFlash portable HD/SD recorder/player. nanoFlash records HD/SD video and audio using the high-quality Sony XDCAM 422 CODEC onto affordable CompactFlash® cards. nanoFlash is the world’s smallest, lowest-power camcorder-mountable professional recorder/player, featuring HD/SD-SDI, HDMI, and analog audio I/O.
nanoFlash delivers exceptional video quality at data-rates up to 160Mbps (XDCAM 422 CODEC) or 220Mbps 4:2:2 (I-Frame-only); virtually indistinguishable from uncompressed, even in high-motion complex scenery. Superb 24-bit 48KHz uncompressed audio (embedded or consumer-level analog) complements this stunning video. The video and audio are conveniently stored in either MXF or Quicktime® file format onto low-cost CompactFlash (CF) cards (the nanoFlash has dual CF card slots). The footage can be played / edited directly off the cards (or copied to a hard-drive), using 3rd party external USB or Firewire-800 CF card readers.
Unlike Firewire-based recorders, nanoFlash bypasses the camera’s built-in CODEC, recording at much higher quality levels. The never-compressed HD/SD-SDI or HDMI output from a live camera source is fed directly into the nanoFlash, maintaining the pristine quality directly off the CCD/CMOS sensors. Tape-based camera operators will enjoy the dual benefits of enhanced video (above HDCAM) / audio quality coupled with file-based workflow (no digitizing, no drop-outs). Additionally, nanoFlash offers on-set playback without any of the rewind/re-cue issues associated with tape.
All users will benefit from the lightweight (under 1 lb/400g), low-power (6W active, 0.2W standby), silent operation (no fans or moving parts) and solid-state rugged construction (all-aluminum case). The near universal NLE support (Avid, Final Cut Pro, Edius, Vegas and soon Premiere) provides users with a wide array of editing options. Furthermore, compatibility with almost all HD/SD formats, including 1080i60/50, 1080psf30/25/24, 720p60/50 and 480i/576i, over SDI or HDMI, allows nanoFlash to be used with a wide range of cameras and video sources.
nanoFlash enables users to trade-off video quality and record time, by adjusting the video bit-rate over a wide range from 35Mbps up to 220Mbps. Internal tests at Convergent Design indicate that 100Mbps XDCAM 422 footage is virtually identical to uncompressed, providing 40 minutes of record time per 32GB Compact Flash card (or 80 minutes across two cards). Affordable Compact Flash cards from Sandisk, Delkin and Lexar have been qualified from use in the nanoFlash.
Applications include upgrading the built-in recorder on your camera, surveillance, medical, POV cameras, as well as a playback device for museums, theme parks, client presentations, etc.
